Deputy Minister of Commerce Mr. Zhong Shan met with Mr. Robert Rogowsky, Director of Operations at U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) on May 20. The two sides exchanged views on such issues as strengthening of Sino-US trade and economic cooperation and proper handling of trade frictions.

Zhong Shan said that China attaches great importance to Sino-US relations, and Sino-US trade and economic cooperation is vital to that relations. The two Sides should properly handle issues of trade and economic cooperation through consultations on an equal-footing, and should gain a correct understanding on present trade imbalance. China does not pursue trade surplus, and hope Sino-US trade and economic cooperation a healthy and balanced development. The two governments could play a more important role by strengthening cooperation, developing a platform of communication for local governments, business associations and enterprises of the two countries, and for eliminating trade disputes, so as to promote development of trade.

Regarding trade frictions between China and the US, China hope USITC shall adhere to a neutral position in its trade remedy investigations, and make fair decisions based on facts according to law, and fight against trade protectionism in the US.

Rogowsky said that the healthy development of Sino-US trade and economic cooperation is of great importance to both countries, and communication and exchanges are the basis for solving all problems. Positive progress has been made through the mechanism of Sino-US Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade (JCCT) and Sino-US Strategic Economic Dialogue. Further efforts should be made to strengthen multi-level and multi channel bilateral exchanges and cooperation. USITC would keep its neutral position in its trade remedy investigations, and take serious consideration to the opinions of Chinese side, and to make fair investigation and decision.

Zhong Shan also made a briefing, as requested by the US side, on measures taken by the Chinese government in dealing with the financial crisis and revitalizing national economy.
